Practise essential Spanish verbs by translating each from English. Knowing these verbs by heart is a key foundation for speaking Spanish. Beginner–elementary level.

Foundational Spanish verbsbailar (to dance), hablar (to speak), preguntar (to ask), contestar (to answer), ver (to see/watch), salir (to leave/go out), dormir (to sleep), cocinar (to cook), vivir (to live), tomar (to take/drink). These ten cover an enormous range of daily activity.

Three verb groups: -ar, -er, -ir — Spanish verbs belong to three conjugation families: hablar, bailar, cocinar (-ar — the most common); ver (-er); salir, dormir, vivir (-ir). Regular -ar present tense: hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, hablan. Irregular ones to watch: salir → salgo (yo), ver → veo (yo), dormir → duermo (stem-changing).

Using these verbs naturally¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?). Salgo a las ocho (I leave at eight). ¿Puedo preguntarte algo? (Can I ask you something?). No contestó el teléfono (He didn't answer the phone). Vemos una película y tomamos algo (We'll watch a film and have a drink).
