Don't be tricked by -a endingsel problema is masculine despite ending in -a — it comes from Greek. Same pattern: el programa, el idioma, el sistema, el tema. Always un gran problema, never una gran problema. El papel can mean paper (material) or role: jugar un papel importante (to play an important role).
