El plato (plate) is masculine; la taza (cup) is feminine. Appliances: el microondas is masculine (note: no accent — microondas, not microónda).

Kitchen instructions — Pon el plato en el microondas dos minutos (Put the plate in the microwave for two minutes). ¿Puedes pasar el tenedor? (Can you pass the fork?). La esponja está en el fregadero (The sponge is at the sink). Calienta el agua en el hervidor (Heat the water in the kettle). Guarda la cuchara limpia en el cajón (Put the clean spoon in the drawer).
