Picante — a false friend for somePicante means spicy-hot (as in chilli heat), not temperature-hot (caliente). Este chile es muy picante (This chilli is very spicy). Cocinar a fuego lento (to cook on a low heat) is an essential phrase. Rebanar (to slice) → rebanadas (slices): Corta el pan en rebanadas (Slice the bread).
