📌
Ser — present tense conjugationsoy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. Completely irregular — no resemblance to the infinitive. These six forms must be memorised as a unit; they are among the most frequently used words in Spanish. Ser is one of only two "to be" verbs, and it handles identity, origin, material, profession, and time.
🔧
When to use ser, not estar — Use ser (not estar) for: professions (Soy ingeniero), nationality/origin (Es de Argentina), permanent characteristics (El cielo es azul), material (La mesa es de madera), time and dates (Son las dos. Hoy es lunes), and passive voice (Fue escrito por).
💡
Soy yo / eres tú — after ser — After ser, subject pronouns switch to the strong form: Soy yo. Eres . Es él. This is the pattern for answering "Who is it?": ¿Quién es? — Soy yo. In English you might say "It's me" (object pronoun); Spanish uses the subject pronoun after ser.
