📌
Poder — o→ue stem change — puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden. The o → ue change affects all forms except nosotros and vosotros (the classic "boot verb" pattern): puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden. The stem pod- stays in nosotros/vosotros.
🔧
Poder vs saber — two kinds of can — Poder = to be able to (circumstances, permission, physical ability in the moment): No puedo salir esta noche. Saber = to know how to (a learned skill): Sabe nadar muy bien. In English both are often "can" — in Spanish the distinction is obligatory.
💡
Poder + infinitive — always follows an infinitive — Poder is always followed by an infinitive (never a conjugated verb): ¿Puedes ayudarme? No podemos salir. Pueden entrar. There is no equivalent of the English construction "can be" as a passive — Spanish uses other structures for that.
