Ir — completely irregular present tense — voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van. These forms bear no resemblance to the infinitive ir — they must be memorised as a unit. Ir is one of the most common Spanish verbs and appears constantly in conversation. The vamos form is also used as an imperative "let's go".
🔧
Ir a + infinitive — the near future — Ir a + infinitive is the most common way to talk about the near future in Spanish: Voy a comer ahora. ¿Qué vas a hacer? Vamos a salir esta noche. It expresses plans and intentions and is used far more than the future tense in everyday spoken Spanish.
💡
Ir vs irse — a meaningful contrast — Ir (to go): Voy a casa. Irse (to leave / go away): Me voy (I'm leaving). The reflexive adds a sense of departure or moving away from the current location. ¿Ya te vas? (Are you leaving already?). Both are extremely common — knowing the distinction is essential.
