📌
Qué vs cuál before es — This distinction trips up many learners: ¿Qué es? asks for a definition or category: ¿Qué es una sinfonía? ¿Cuál es? asks for an identity or specific choice: ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? ¿Cuál es la capital de Francia? If you could answer with "it is a type of…", use qué; if answering with a specific thing, use cuál.
🔧
Quién vs que in relative clauses¿Quién/quiénes? are interrogative pronouns asking about people. In relative clauses (not questions), que is used for both people and things: el hombre que llegó. After prepositions in relative clauses, use quien: la persona con quien hablé. Don't confuse the question form with the relative pronoun.
💡
All interrogatives keep their accent in indirect questions — Question words keep the written accent even when they appear inside a statement (indirect question): No sé quién lo hizo. Me preguntó qué quería. Dime cuál prefieres. If the clause could be phrased as a direct question, the accent stays. Without an accent, que, quien, cual become relative pronouns.
