Lo/la — singular direct object pronouns — Lo replaces masculine singular nouns: el libro → lo leo, el coche → lo vendo. La replaces feminine singular nouns: la mesa → la compro, la película → la veo. The pronoun carries the gender of the replaced noun, not of the speaker.

Los/las — plural direct object pronouns — Los replaces masculine plural nouns: los libros → los tengo. Las replaces feminine plural nouns: las llaves → las busco. A mixed-gender group uses the masculine plural: los chicos y las chicas → los invité a todos.

Lo replacing ideas, not just nouns — The neuter pronoun lo replaces a concept, statement, or adjective rather than a specific noun: ¿Sabes que llegaron? — Sí, ya lo sé. ¿Estás cansada? — Sí, lo estoy. This neuter lo is one of the most common pronouns in Spanish and has no gender — it never changes.
