Free exercise on Spanish demonstrative adjectives (este, ese, aquel). Choose the correct form. Beginner–elementary level.
📚 Quick grammar review
📌
Three levels of distance — Spanish demonstratives mark three degrees of distance from the speaker. Este/esta/estos/estas = this/these (near me). Ese/esa/esos/esas = that/those (near you or not too far). Aquel/aquella/aquellos/aquellas = that/those over there (far from both of us).
🔧
Agreement with the noun, not the speaker — Demonstrative adjectives agree in gender and number with the noun they modify, not with the person speaking: este libro, esta silla, estos chicos, estas flores. A common mistake is using esto/eso/aquello (neuter pronouns) as adjectives — these can never precede a noun.
💡
Demonstrative pronouns — same forms, used alone — When the noun is omitted (replaced rather than modified), the same forms work as pronouns: ¿Cuál prefieres? — Este (this one). In modern Spanish the accent mark on demonstrative pronouns (éste, ése) is optional and increasingly dropped.
