Conjugating regular -IR verbs (Present tense) 1

-ir verb present tense endings — Regular -ir verbs: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en. Using vivir: vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven. The key difference from -er verbs is in nosotros (-imos vs -emos) and vosotros (-ís vs -éis). All other forms are identical to -er verbs.

Common regular -ir verbs — vivir (to live), escribir (to write), recibir (to receive), abrir (to open), subir (to go up / upload), partir (to leave / divide), discutir (to discuss/argue), sufrir (to suffer), unir (to join), interrumpir (to interrupt). Note: abrir and escribir have irregular past participles.

Stem-changing -ir verbs — a preview — Many common -ir verbs change their stem in the present tense: pedir → pido, dormir → duermo, seguir → sigo. But fully regular -ir verbs like vivir, escribir don't change their stem at all. Always check whether a new -ir verb is regular or stem-changing when you first learn it.
