Kitchen appliances and surfaces — el hervidor (kettle), el lavaplatos (dishwasher), el mantel (tablecloth), la licuadora (blender — Latin America; la batidora in Spain), las servilletas (napkins), los platos (plates/dishes), el tostador (toaster), el refrigerador (fridge — Latin America; el frigorífico in Spain), el horno (oven), el mostrador (counter/worktop).

Regional appliance vocabulary — El refrigerador (fridge) is standard in Latin America; Spain uses el frigorífico. La licuadora (blender) in Latin America = la batidora (Spain) — though technically la batidora can be a hand-mixer too. El hervidor eléctrico (electric kettle) is a must for tea lovers. El mostrador is the kitchen worktop or a shop counter.

Kitchen conversations — ¿Pusiste los platos en el lavaplatos? (Did you put the plates in the dishwasher?). Pon el mantel antes de que lleguen (Put the tablecloth on before they arrive). El tostador no funciona bien (The toaster isn't working properly). Hierve el agua en el hervidor (Boil the water in the kettle). El horno tarda en precalentar (The oven takes a while to preheat).
