Room names and regional variationel dormitorio (bedroom — also la habitación, el cuarto), la sala (living room — el salón in Spain), el baño (bathroom), la cocina (kitchen). El sótano (basement) and el ático (attic/loft) are common in apartment buildings.

Prepositions and movement between rooms — Use en to say where you are: Estoy en la cocina. Use al (contraction of a + el) for movement: Voy al baño (I'm going to the bathroom). El estudio está al lado del dormitorio. Subí al ático (I went up to the attic).
