'SI' CLAUSES - Imperfect subjunctive + conditional 1

Hypothetical si-clauses: imperfect subjunctive + conditional — To express a hypothetical or unlikely condition in the present/future: Si + imperfect subjunctive → conditional. Si tuvieras dinero, viajarías (If you had money, you would travel). The si-clause can come first or second: Viajarías si tuvieras dinero.

Conditional tense formation — The conditional is formed by adding endings to the full infinitive: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían: hablaría, comería, viviría. Irregular verbs use the same stems as the future: tener → tendría, hacer → haría, poder → podría, decir → diría.

The golden rule: never si + conditional — In Spanish, the conditional NEVER appears in the si-clause: Si tuviera (NOT si tendría). The si-clause always uses the imperfect subjunctive for hypothetical present/future conditions. The conditional goes in the main clause only. This is the most common error in this structure.
