Past perfect — había/habías/había… + past participle — The past perfect (pluscuamperfecto) expresses an action completed before another past action: Cuando llegué, Juan ya se había ido (When I arrived, Juan had already left). Form: había/habías/había/habíamos/habíais/habían + past participle. The participle is invariable in compound tenses.

Irregular past participles — The same irregular participles used in the present perfect appear here: hacer → hecho, decir → dicho, ver → visto, poner → puesto, volver → vuelto, abrir → abierto, escribir → escrito, romper → roto, morir → muerto. These must be memorised.

Past perfect vs preterite — which came first — The past perfect always describes the earlier of two past events. Sequence: Estudié mucho (preterite — happened later/at a point) then retrospectively Había estudiado toda la noche (past perfect — the studying preceded the exam). Words like ya, todavía no, cuando, después de que often signal that the past perfect is needed.
