📌
Verbs that require a before an infinitive — A large group of Spanish verbs take a before an infinitive: aprender a, empezar a, comenzar a, ayudar a, enseñar a, ir a, volver a, atreverse a, dedicarse a. The a is part of the verb's meaning and must not be omitted.
🔧
Verbs that require de before an infinitive — Another group takes de: acabar de, dejar de, tratar de, olvidarse de, alegrarse de, arrepentirse de, encargarse de. Acabar de + infinitive expresses the very recent past: Acabo de llegar (I have just arrived).
💡
Verbs with no preposition before an infinitive — Many common verbs take an infinitive directly — no preposition: querer, poder, deber, saber, necesitar, preferir, desear, parecer, soler. Quiero comer (NOT quiero a comer). If you're unsure whether a preposition is needed, it's better to look up the specific verb than to guess.
