PERSONAL A in Spanish 1

The personal a — required before human direct objects — In Spanish, when the direct object of a verb is a specific person (or pet), insert a before it: Veo a mi madre. Llamo a Juan. ¿Conoces a María? This a has no English translation — it's a purely grammatical marker with no meaning of its own.

When the personal a is omitted — Do NOT use the personal a: (1) after tener in most cases: Tengo dos hermanos; (2) when the person is non-specific or hypothetical: Busco una secretaria (any secretary) — vs Busco a la secretaria (a specific, known one); (3) before collective nouns: El director reunió al equipo.

Personal a can change the meaning — The presence or absence of the personal a actually changes the meaning of some sentences: El perro siguió al niño (The dog followed the child) vs El perro siguió el olor (The dog followed the smell). With personified or beloved animals, the personal a is also used: Busco a mi gato.
