The 9 most important irregular past participles — hacer → hecho, decir → dicho, ver → visto, poner → puesto, volver → vuelto, abrir → abierto, escribir → escrito, romper → roto, morir → muerto. These 9 cover the most common irregular participles. Compound verbs built on these stems inherit the same irregular form.
🔧
Compound verbs inherit the irregularity — Any verb built on an irregular stem uses the same irregular participle: poner → puesto → componer → compuesto, proponer → propuesto. volver → vuelto → devolver → devuelto, resolver → resuelto. decir → dicho → contradecir → contradicho. Learning the base irregular gives you the compounds.
💡
Participles as adjectives — they agree — When used as adjectives (after estar or as standalone modifiers), past participles agree in gender and number with the noun: La puerta está abierta. El problema está resuelto. Las ventanas están rotas. In compound tenses (after haber), the participle is always invariable: Han roto las ventanas.
